Pretty in the Pines

Bond Girl

Meet Shelby.

A Lifestyle and Fashion Blogger from Pretty in the Pines hailing from Raleigh, North Carolina.  This southern beauty recently joined our Summer Editorial Team.  Learn more about her in our Q + A below and keep an eye out for some amazing content from this inspiring Bond Girl!

Q

What inspired you to start blogging?

A

Ever since I was a child, I’ve loved planning outfits and taking photos. I would make scrapbooks of outfits and photos I had taken on my disposable cameras and I loved the entire process of creating something that someone could look through to see trends and styles I loved (which at the time, was probably Limited Too)! Fast forward to college and that passion was hidden underneath all of the studying, extra-curricular activities, leadership roles and responsibilities, and trying to figure out what my career would be. Fast forward again to the summer of 2014 and I felt like something was missing in my life. That something was an outlet for all of my creative thoughts and plans for my passions such as photography, fashion, entertaining, home decor, healthy and happy living, and my home of North Carolina. I remember flying back from a trip and while the plane was descending toward the RDU airport, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride and thankfulness to be from an area of such beauty. As the plane got closer and closer to the tall and lush pine trees, the name “Pretty in the Pines” came to mind and it couldn’t be more fitting for my blog.

Q

Where are you located?

A

I currently live just a minute outside of Raleigh in North Carolina and don’t plan on leaving anytime soon. I love everything this area has to offer and really love being just a few hours away from a beach trip or a weekend in the mountains. We also live right beside several lakes and great universities so it really has everything you could ever need. Plus, it’s absolutely beautiful here!

Q

Do you have a day job or do you focus on blogging full time?

A

I do have a full-time job in the pharmaceutical field. I majored in biology and have been working in healthcare and pharmaceuticals for most of my post-grad career. I thought I wanted to be a dentist all through college and actually applied and interviewed but I couldn’t be more thankful now for how things turned out. I’ve been able to discover my talents and true passions and if I had been accepted to dental school, I know Pretty in the Pines would probably not exist.

Q

What are some of the behind the scenes challenges of blogging?

A

Oh, where do I begin?! Some of the challenges that come to mind are balancing your blog with your personal life.

Your blog can only grow if you work hard at it,

and sometimes that means coming home from work and being on my computer until it is time to go to bed. It also takes up a lot of time on the weekends. The best time to take photos is before most people wake up on Saturday or Sunday so I rarely sleep in on the weekends. Another huge challenge is learning about SEO, html, how to use your DSLR, affiliate programs, creating a media kit, negotiating, social media management and tools, and keeping up with emails! It seems every day I am learning about a new tool or strategy I should be using.

Q

How have you grown- personally and professionally- through blogging?

A

Personally, I’ve learned what I’m actually skilled in and am talented at. I never really became aware of those things while I was in college studying away in the library for what I thought I was supposed to do. I’ve learned that I have a strong passion for planning and decorating for small events as well as styling outfits for any type of occasion! One of my favorite parts of life is celebrating together with family and friends so being able to plan something around that brings me a lot of joy! I am about a year away from our wedding day and I can barely contain my excitement for all of the planning I have going on. I’ve also proud of how much my fiance and I have improved with using our camera! Professionally, I have learned how to negotiate, how to use social media programs and apps, how to approach a brand on a creative idea I have, and how to take advantage of networking opportunities!

I’ve also learned that I love helping other businesses become successful.

Whether it be two businesses collaborating after meeting at an event I hosted or just giving tips and tricks to others in the industry, I love the feeling that I helped someone else get a step further with their goals.

Q

What are your favorite spots around town in Raleigh?

A

There are so many good places to shop and eat around here! Cameron Village and North Hills are two great shopping spots with a lot of options for shopping and food! Some of my favorite restaurants are Sitti, a Lebanese restaurant downtown, The Pit Authentic Barbecue, Gonza’s Tacos & Tequila or Dos Toquitos, Gravy, and La Farm Bakery. One of my latest favorite spots though is this coffee shop/cafe called Sola! They have amazing avocado toast and the most delicious mini cinnamon/sugar donuts!

Q

3 must have beauty / skin care products?

A

I’ve been really into skincare lately so I’ll share a couple of my favorite skincare products! The first is this everyday facial moisturizer with sunscreen called Coconut Daily Face Lotion SPF 15. It acts as a great moisturizer and primer and you can get a huge pump bottle for under $10! I use it before I apply my favorite foundation which is Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hr Full Coverage Foundation. Both of these products are made with natural ingredients and without any harsh chemical sunscreen filters. I try to use as many natural and safe beauty products I can, especially if it is something I use daily. Another product I’ve been loving is the Superhero Elastic Stretch Volumizing Mascara by IT Cosmetics!

Q

Do you have any exciting upcoming summer travels?

A

I have a really exciting beach trip in June planned, a long weekend trip to Newport, RI, and multiple Charleston trips for wedding planning so stay tuned on the Pretty in the Pines Instagram for photos!
